A study conducted at the University of Gothenburg suggests that sulforaphane, a compound found in broccoli sprouts, may effectively improve blood sugar levels in individuals with prediabetes, a condition that precedes type 2 diabetes.
Sulforaphane, a chemical compound found in broccoli sprouts, has been linked to improved blood sugar levels in individuals with prediabetes, a condition that precedes type 2 diabetes. This connection was revealed in a study conducted at the University of Gothenburg. Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have previously identified sulforaphane as an antidiabetic agent in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
A 2017 patient study demonstrated significantly lower blood sugar levels in diabetic patients after they consumed large doses of sulforaphane extracted from broccoli sprouts. Professor Anders Rosengren and his colleagues focused their attention on prediabetes for this particular study. Prediabetes is characterized by gradually rising blood sugar levels due to impaired insulin production, serving as a precursor to type 2 diabetes. The study involved 89 participants with elevated fasting blood sugar, a common indicator of prediabetes. Other criteria included being overweight or obese and aged between 35 and 75 years old. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either sulforaphane or a placebo for a period of twelve weeks. Neither the participants nor the researchers were aware of who received which treatment. A total of 74 participants completed all stages of the study. The results indicated that those who took the sulforaphane compound experienced a greater average reduction in fasting blood sugar compared to the placebo group. This difference between the two groups was substantial. A more pronounced difference was observed when analyzing specific clinical subgroups. The group that exhibited the most significant improvement after taking sulforaphane presented with early signs of mild age-related diabetes, a relatively low BMI within the context of the study, low insulin resistance, a low incidence of fatty liver disease, and low insulin secretion. The third stage of the study, conducted in collaboration with Professor Fredrik Bäckhed at the University of Gothenburg, delved into the realm of gut bacteria. Researchers discovered a gut bacterium capable of interacting with sulforaphane, potentially contributing to further enhanced efficacy of the broccoli compound. Quantitatively, fasting blood sugar differences were 0.2 millimoles per liter between all participants who received sulforaphane compared to the placebo group. This difference increased to 0.4 millimoles per liter within the specific clinical subgroup and reached 0.7 millimoles per liter in those who belonged to the clinical subgroup and possessed the identified gut bacterium. The prevalence of prediabetes in Sweden is estimated to be as high as ten percent, with no established treatment structure currently in place. While the condition often goes undetected, early detection significantly increases the chances of preventing the development of type 2 diabetes. Anders Rosengren emphasizes the importance of early and personalized interventions to prevent the disease. 'The treatment of prediabetes is currently lacking in many respects, but these new findings pave the way for the possibility of precision treatment using sulforaphane extracted from broccoli as a functional food. However, lifestyle factors remain the cornerstone of any treatment for prediabetes, including exercise, a healthy diet, and weight loss,' he states.'The study's results also offer a general model of how pathophysiology and gut flora interact and influence treatment responses. This model could have broader implications,' Anders Rosengren concludes
