Energy providers that are part of the government's Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme could help make your home for energy efficient for free
Millions of people living in the UK could be entitled to a free boiler upgrade without realising. The government's Energy Company Obligation scheme, which began in 2013, is set to run until 2028 and involves providing free improvements to homes across the country.
The scheme is currently in its fourth version , which started in 2022 and lasts until 2026, as Ofgem establishes goals for energy providers and keeps track of how they are doing. If you're looking into a new energy-efficient boiler, you might qualify for an upgrade if you meet the criteria. You must also live in England or Wales - those in Scotland can seek similar support via Home Energy Scotland. If you get the Warm Home Discount as part of the 'core group' you are likely to be eligible. If you own your house, it must have an energy efficiency rating of D, E, F or G to be eligible. If you rent from a private landlord, the house must have an energy efficiency rating of E, F or G to be eligible. You must have the owner’s permission to do the work.
