found that the cost of a full-time nursery place for under-twos has increased by nearly £3,000 a year in England in the last decade, a rise of 26 per cent. The East of England and the West Midlands have seen the biggest rises.

The feeling of being in the trenches is not far away. Some parents can feel guilty about calling in the special reserve at all hours when they should be enjoying retirement or their late careers. Some grandparents prefer to actually still do their “day job” rather than go back to the hard slog of looking after pre-schoolers.that a big economic problem in the UK was the continuing withdrawal from the workplace by the over-50s.
Age UK’s Caroline Abrahams tells me that grandparents provide a contribution to society and the economy, which all too often goes unrecognised. “While these arrangements offer a mutually beneficial situation for many families, we need to remember that there will be many grandparents who will either want to carry on working or need to return to the workplace themselves to survive the cost of living crisis,” she said.
