'The only person who can explain Diego Morales’ military record is Morales,' columnist James Briggs writes. 'He has decided not to do it.'
Wren: “A typical National Guard commitment is eight years. Your campaign says you proudly served only five, and then remained on individual ready reserve. How do you account for the three additional years? Did you or the National Guard cut short your commitment?”
Morales’ military record, undecorated as it is, would not warrant much attention if he discussed it in proportion to his time served. But Morales has a chronic addiction to plucking kernels of reality out of his biography and pretending they add up to a movie theater-size box of popcorn. Morales has used misleading language to describe his military career and now he seems to be backpedaling. Morales has repeatedly, and as recently last month, said he was “stationed” in Fort Benning, Georgia, even though he was only there for training and not a full-time assignment.
This is Morales’ second high-profile run for public office and what we’ve learned through two campaigns is that he embellishes his otherwise respectable background and dismisses major red flags that might,be pardonable if he would just own them.
