A state official is announcing a bill to prohibit encampments in certain areas, including parks
San Diego County officials on Monday awarded a total of about $5 million in grants to three cities as part of a $10 million program to increase shelter options for people living in encampments and vehicles.
The information-only meeting was held the same day San Diego County Board of Supervisors Chairman Nathan Fletcher announced that San Diego, Oceanside and Vista would be the first to receive a portion of $10 million in grants available to any local city with a plan to shelter homeless people in their communities.
“One thing I would hope is we could continue to remember that we’re talking about human beings who are suffering here,” Olivet said. “I understand their anger in a lot of ways. I understand their frustration. I understand their desperation to want to just do something.” Vista will receive $65,000 to help open its first safe parking lot. The city had considered opening a shelter,Oceanside is receiving about $3.3 million to help the city open a 50-bed shelter and navigation center under construction at the former Ocean Shores High School. Oceanside Assistant City Manager Michael Gossman said Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, helped the city receive $2 million in state funding for the navigation center, which also will help bridge a funding gap.
