From episode count to season leads and more, don't miss a single update from season 5 of Netflix's 'Bridgerton' here.
Warning: Major spoilers for Bridgerton season 4 ahead. Dearest gentle reader, we are most pleased to confirm that the Bridgerton season 5 is fast approaching and, much to our delight, it won't be the last season of the hit Netflix series.
Netflix's Bridgerton, created by Chris Van Dusen and produced by Shonda Rhimes, has quickly cemented itself as a pop culture landmark in the six years since its premiere. The Regency-era romance drama broke records when it first debuted on the streamer in 2020 and has continued its historic streak with subsequent seasons. Back in 2022, Bridgerton's second season was Netflix's most-watched English-language TV series of all time. The show has received critical acclaim across all seasons, earning praise for its costuming, acting, dramatic and sexy storylines, and diverse on-screen representation. At the time of writing, both seasons 1 and 3 are among Netflix's Top 10 most popular shows of all time, with over 200 million views combined. Audiences are head over heels in love with the ton universe, and Netflix is happy to keep providing. So, dearest reader, with your best interests in mind, we've compiled a guide of everything you need to know about Bridgerton season 5 and beyond. Bridgerton season 5 will be about Francesca and Michaela Stirling, Netflix confirmed on March 24, 2026. ICYMI, Bridgerton is based on a series of novels of the same name, written by historical romance author Julia Quinn. The novels detail the major romances of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The first two seasons of Bridgerton followed the events of the first two Bridgerton books: The Duke and I and The Viscount Who Loved Me, centered around Daphne Bridgerton and Simon, the Duke of Hastings, and Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, respectively. The third season jumped in chronological order, following the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton, which adapts the friends-to-lovers journey of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. The fourth season followed the third book, An Offer From a Gentleman, centering on the cross-class story of Benedict and Sophie. Bridgerton is sticking to its source material format of following a new love story each season; showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed to Teen Vogue that she “doesn't have any plans to combine seasons.' “I want every sibling to have their own season, and I know that Shonda wants that as well,” said Brownell. However, since a couple of seasons have strayed from the books' chronology, fans are eagerly awaiting the announcement of which Bridgerton sibling will fall in love next, and Brownell confirmed to Deadline that seasons 5 and 6 will focus on Eloise and Francesca , though the exact order was then to be announced. The showrunners are once again switching the book order to prioritize other stories, and it makes sense given what we have gotten so far of Francesca's story. Brownell previously told Decider that Francesca's love story was a priority in seasons 3 and 4 to set up “for later down the line.” And down the line means season 5. She added, “Francesca’s book, for those who are familiar, takes place over a longer amount of years and it has more twists and turns. And so we felt like we wanted to start that story earlier so that we could play out more chapters of her book.” In the books, Francesca gives marriage a second chance, and her story is told in the sixth book of the series, When He Was Wicked. After years of mourning her husband, she and John's cousin, Michael, who's been genderswapped for the show, ultimately develop a relationship. The logline for season 5 is as follows: “The fifth season of Bridgerton spotlights introverted middle daughter Francesca . Two years after losing her beloved husband, John, Fran decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.” Netflix also shared new character descriptions for both Francesca and Michaela. “Reserved and contained, Francesca has long felt out of place in the world. As Michaela stirs up new feelings inside her, Fran will make discoveries about herself that could change everything,” the description for Francesca reads. “Beneath Michaela’s charming and vivacious exterior hides a vulnerable young woman who is quick to run the second she feels discomfort. But this season, Michaela must face her vulnerability head-on as she’s forced to navigate her relationship to her late cousin’s legacy—and to Francesca,” Michaela’s follows. Speaking to Bustle, Brownell teased that when it comes time to tell Francesca's story, there will likely be a time jump, so season 5 won't likely pick up from where we left off and we'll likely get to see more of the family settle into their married lives, which also tracks for the timelime of the remaining stories from the remaining eligible siblings. “I think whenever we decide to tell Francesca’s story, we will absolutely want there to be some kind of time jump. It’s very important for Francesca to take a significant amount of time to grieve John, because he is genuinely so important to her, and is one of her great loves. So it’s important to me that he gets his proper time before she finds great love with Michaela,” Brownell explained. “You might notice that we really haven’t been in Michaela’s POV at all since she arrived on the show. And that’s really intentional,' Brownell also told Deadline. 'I think there’s a lot going on with Michaela that people will find out. Her leaving at the end is definitely meant to play as a mystery for people, and it’s something we will explore in the future. We’ll understand more in future seasons.” Hannah Dodd weighed in on Francesca's impending romance speaking to Los 40 while promoting season 4 of the show in Spain. “I think what the showrunners and writers really wanted to do was make sure that a queer love story was at the center, that it got a full season, a full eight episodes. I think that is the point that queer love deserves an entire season and a full exploration, so we are really excited,' she said, adding that “hopefully we get to tell that story at some point.” Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton season 5 will feature eight episodes, just like previous seasons. Though a release date is yet to be announced, it's likely the season will also be released in two parts, like seasons 3 and 4. Part two of Bridgerton season 4 premiered on February 26, 2026, and ended with a handful of loose ends. Let's start with the season 4 leads: Sophie Baek and Benedict Bridgerton. After following their romance throughout the entire season, Sophie ends season 4 with not one but two new surnames. At the queen's ball, Sophie and the Bridgertons pull a scheme to have Sophie legitimized, so she becomes Sophie Gun. If you stayed for the post-credits scene after the finale, you also know she and Benedict married at My Cottage, meaning she's now officially Sophie Bridgerton. Sophie and Benedict's wedding is attended by the entire Bridgerton family , Sophie's friends from the various family houses where she's worked, and Posy and her husband. At the wedding, Kate Bridgerton poses the question that all viewers are now wondering: “Whose wedding do you think we will be attending next?” And well…. The two remaining eligible Bridgertons, Eloise and the newly widowed Francesca, both weigh in. While Eloise says she loves a wedding “as an attendee,” Francesca chimes in, saying she's had “her great love” and “one time is enough.” Then we also have the Lady Whistledown mystery. In season 4, Penelope announces she's putting down the pen and quitting Lady Whistledown for good. However, by the finale, a new column emerges with a new penmanship. That means that, yes, we will have a new Lady Whistledown for Bridgerton season 5—and you might have already noticed a shift in Julie Andrews's narration. “Tom Verica, who’s our producing director, worked with Julie on finding just like a slightly different inflection for this new version of Whistledown,' showrunner Jess Brownell told Variety. 'We have some ideas about what the new voice of Whistledown is that you’ll hear a lot more about in season 5. And the hope was that Julie’s performance kind of tips the hand a little bit about this Whistledown being slightly different than the last one. It’s not just going to be a rehash of the way Penelope did the column.” “What was really exciting for us was getting to start a fresh mystery,” Brownell also told Forbes. “I think with Penelope, because that's who Whistledown is in the books, it was never something we felt we could really play with too far in terms of red herrings and clues. I think we felt ready for Penelope to embrace a next chapter, and now we get to have a genuine mystery on the show.” This is where we rejoice, because it looks like we could be getting Bridgerton season 5 as early as 2027. Let's rewind a little. Bridgerton season 4 was fast-tracked to production only a few months after the release of season 3. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the UK premiere of season 3 part 2, showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed the then-ideal pace of the show's development per season. “We are working to try and put the seasons out more quickly, but they do take eight months to film, and then they have to be edited, and then they have to be dubbed into every language,” Brownell said. “And the writing takes a very long time as well, so we’re kind of on a two-year pace, we’re trying to speed up, but somewhere in that range.” And well sped up they have! Speaking to Bustle, Brownell announced that production is making progress toward further shortening the wait time for season 5. “When I said the two-year time mark, I knew we were going to be a little bit quicker than that, but I was trying to under-promise and over-deliver. And instead, I think I just made everyone really upset. But we really have been endeavoring—from even before that point — to make everything quicker. I would say with season 5, we’re on track—all things , if everything goes to plan — we’re on track to either meet or exceed the year-and-a-half timeline.' Brownell confirmed at a BFI event in London in February 2025 that Bridgerton season 5 would begin production soon, and Netflix later confirmed the production's start date as March 24, 2026. The project is currently being filmed in London. The streamer unveiled a photoshoot featuring the leads to announce it. Though no casting announcements other than the leads have been made official, you can expect most of the show's namesake—the Bridgerton family—to return for season 5. This list includes: Luke Newton , Claudia Jessie , Luke Thompson , Ruth Gemmell , Hannah Dodd , Florence Hunt , and Will Tilston . One big question mark at the end of season 4 was Lady Danbury , given her plans to travel overseas. However, Jess Brownell has confirmed she will not only return for season 5 but will be a key character. 'Sending her away at the end of the season was more about completing an arc for her and the queen, where Danbury gets to put herself first,” Brownell told Tudum. Speaking to Variety, she added, “Danbury is absolutely a part of the story moving forward. She’s quite a big part of season 5, in fact. But I think we wanted to shake up the dynamic. She had been the Queen’s side, at her beck and call for four seasons, and I think going forward, the Queen is seeing Danbury more as her peer in many ways, as her true friend. And now the two of them are able to be true friends, and Alice can be in more of the service role that Lady Danbury sometimes had to fulfill. So that’s the answer to that.” We will also get more Sophie. Speaking to Cinemablend, Brownell said we've only “scratched the surface” when it comes to Benophie, teasing that Benedict will play a crucial role in both Eloise's and Francesca's stories. In an interview with Forbes, the showrunner also shared that Kate and Penelope will also be important for Eloise's story. As far as Sophie is concerned, in the same interview, Brownell revealed she's excited about “getting to see the completion of her Cinderella arc, and just letting her wear some beautiful gowns next season, that’s something I’m really excited about, for both Sophie and Yerin.” We might also see Victor Alli, who played the late John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin, in flashbacks. “We’re definitely a flashback show, so, I wouldn’t completely rule it out,” Brownell told Deadline. Before season 4 even came out, Netflix had already renewed Bridgerton for seasons 5 and 6. The news came in the form of a new notice from Lady Whistledown, which read: “Dearest Gentle Reader, rarely is this author granted the opportunity to share with you such information. It is with great pleasure I can announce Bridgerton shall return for Seasons 5 and 6. Do celebrate accordingly.” And we shall! Read the full letter below: If season 5 will be Francesca's, then season 6 will be Eloise's. Eloise's love story is told in Quinn's fifth book, To Sir Phillip, With Love, which chronicles her epistolary romance with Sir Phillip Crane, who has already appeared briefly on the hit Netflix show, played by Chris Fulton. The duo notably spends roughly a year corresponding before they meet in person. Eloise, as a character, has a newfound appreciation for marriage after John's passing in season 4. In a one-on-one with sister Hyacinth, who's lost faith in love, Eloise says: “I can see that, on occasion, marriage might have its advantages—companionship, family, a prime seat at a soirée. And then, if not for mother and father’s marriage, we would not all have each other, which seems a rather large reward. Most of the time, anyway.” This story will continue to be updated as news about Bridgerton seasons 5 and 6 breaks. Seasons 1–4 of Bridgerton are now streaming only on Netflix.
