Perthshire Great North Run participant Ron Rose won't be the fastest round the half marathon course but his heart is in the right place as he'll prove with a poem of thanks.
A Braco man will join The Great North Run on Sunday and will stop on the Tyne Bridge to thank a Perthshire ex-military charity which helped him and his wife through hard times. The Perth and Kinross Branch of SSAFA came to the rescue when, in 2015, his wife Joan was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. Joan needed to get to Forth Valley Hospital for her chemotherapy and Glasgow for radiotherapy and the services charity lent a hand to help her travel to her treatment.
“Joan was concerned she didn’t have long to live, so in 2019 she decided to start her own business, Purple Welly, offering to do dog walking in Braco.“She’s helped others by taking our wee pug Fred into Braco Primary as a ‘Therapet’ to help boost the children’s confidence with their reading. She’s an amazing lady.
“When I get there and pull out my poem, I will feel massive pride. “I’ll have ‘AS’ - Ann’s initials - on my shirt.”
