Bosch introduces its first smart appliance compatible with the Matter standard at CES 2023. The 100 Series Frech Door Bottom Mount Refrigerator offers a local, secure, and fast connection to your smart home ecosystem.
Home appliance manufacturer Bosch is showcasing its first Matter -enabled appliance at CES this week. The 100 Series Frech Door Bottom Mount Refrigerator, launched in November and expected to be available in the US this spring, retails for $2,500 and features a built-in chip supporting Matter . A firmware update to the smart home standard is slated for this summer, according to Eelco Lammertink of BSH, which owns Bosch , Siemens, Thermador, and Gaggenau.
The 100 series is the counterpart to the Matter-enabled Siemens XXL Fridge unveiled at IFA in Berlin last November, set to launch in the European market on a similar timeline. Lammertink reveals that BSH plans to integrate Matter into all its appliances across the Bosch, Siemens, and Thermador lines, beginning with refrigerators this year, adding another appliance category next year, and three more in 2026. The 100 Series will support Matter 1.3, enabling remote temperature control and notifications from the fridge on your preferred smart home platform. This allows a smart speaker to announce if the door has been left open. While many smart fridges already offer these features, Matter establishes a local connection between the appliance and the ecosystem, ensuring faster and more secure communication. Currently, only Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant support Matter appliances, but Lammertink indicates that Amazon will join the fray this year. There are no updates on Google Home or Apple Home yet. Lammertink states that the plan is to incorporate energy reporting and energy management capabilities into the fridge, enabling it to function as part of a whole-home energy management system. However, he notes that existing appliances will not be updated to Matter (disappointing news for my Thermador range and dishwasher), as the technical challenges are deemed too significant and the risk of malfunctioning appliances too high
