Government’s ban on the sale of alcohol during the Covid-19 lockdown has created an unexpected windfall for the alcohol-free beverage industry.
Sales of alcohol-free beer, cider, wine and sparkling wine at major retailers, including Spar, Woolworths and Checkers, have shot through the roof over the past few weeks.
Janine Corodonna, spokesperson of Pick n Pay, said the demand for alcohol-free drinks had already begun increasing steadily over the past year, but had spiked during the lockdown. Bonita Malherbe, brand manager of Almost Zero, said twice as much of the product was now being sold as over its best period, which was traditionally over Christmas.
Woolworths said it was now working with distributors and suppliers to increase production so that its stores could meet the unforeseen demand for alcohol-free beverages.
