It took the City Press team less than 10 minutes to find cigarettes, despite the banning of cigarette and alcohol sales under the stringent national lockdown restrictions.

Despite the ban under lockdown, booze sales are brisk on the black market as desperate people are prepared to pay the exorbitant prices

Alcohol and cigarette sales remain banned under the relaxed level 4 government risk-adjusted strategy to curb the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus. Before the petrol attendant told us where to find cigarettes in Mahikeng, we had asked a few random people, who looked like smokers, but some were suspicious and told us they had no clue.

Their normal price is about R40. The cheapest brands, such as RG, which usually sells for about R20 a pack, were going for about R50 each.
