DEMOPOLIS, Ala. - Court documents now show that bond in the amount of $1 million has been set for a west Alabama woman recently arrested and charged with an infant’s death. Demopolis Police Chief Rex Flowers said first responders were called to Tender Years on Maria Avenue on the afternoon of March 25. He said CPR was administered to an unresponsive infant, who was then rushed to Whitfield Memorial Hospital. The resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful, and the infant was pronounced dead.
The child’s body was sent for an autopsy, which Demopolis police said was determined to be a homicide. Flowers said video footage from the day care and personnel interviews led to the arrest of an employee on Friday. A murder warrant was obtained against Versa Mae Simmons, 68, of Demopolis.Neither the cause of the child’s death nor other information such as the victim’s name or age were released due to the ongoing investigation.Copyright 2024 WSFA.
