Mexican businessman Alonso Ancira, who has ties to the San Antonio area, has been caught up in a corruption scandal involving Pemex and other companies.
In 2019, Mexican steel tycoon Alonso Ancira was arrested in Spain on allegations that he defrauded Mexico’s state-run oil company in the sale of a moribund fertilizer plant. The deal exploded into a massive corruption scandal in Mexico and Ancira, the cousin of San Antonio auto dealer Ernesto Ancira Jr. , was extradited to Mexico and jailed in 2021. He won his release on the condition that he pay $216.6 million to Pemex , the state oil company, under a “reparation agreement.
Alonso Ancira’s power pendulum “My clients’ shares were stolen, and we are fighting to hold those responsible accountable,” Austin attorney Isaac Budnik Villarreal, who represents the trio, said in an email. The plaintiffs also have filed a criminal complaint against him in Mexico, their suit says. Ancira’s legal troubles stem from the 2014 sale of a fertilizer factory by a company he headed — Alto Hornos de Meixco — to Pemex for about $275 million in 2014.
