Boerne Greyhounds girls push past Salado Eagles in overtime in the 4A state soccer semifinals

GEORGETOWN – Settling a ball in the wind-fueled chaos of trying to play soccer at Birkelbach Field was a challenge Wednesday. But eight minutes into overtime, Boerne junior midfielder Kailey Stringfellow found her chance and scored from about 20 yards out to lift the Greyhounds to a 2-1 victory against Salado in a Class 4A state girls soccer semifinal. Stringfellow capped a sequence that started with a punt from goalkeeper Kinsley Sawyer that rode a wind that gusted at about 30 mph.

Stringfellow maneuvered through two defenders before the ball rolled to Ukeiley, who found a gap and shot for the score. “I was thinking, ‘Avery, Avery, Avery, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it,’ ” Stringfellow said. “And, she did. I was so proud of her because she had been waiting for that goal, and it happened at the perfect time.” That lead looked safe heading into the final moments of the second half.
