Body camera video shows a Rochester police officer applying a tourniquet after being shot at Driving Park and Lake avenues early Friday, March 20, 2026. Rochester, N.Y. — The Rochester Police Department released body camera video Thursday of a shooting that injured an officer early Friday.
Police said the officer stopped at the intersection of Driving Park and Lake avenues around 1 a.m. to speak to a man, identified as Shatique Cato, 34, about a recent shooting in the city. Police said Cato fired three rounds at the officer, striking him at least once in the lower body, then ran away. The officer applied his own tourniquet before other officers arrived and took him to Rochester General Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.Video shows the officer getting out of his patrol car on Driving Park Avenue, turning right on Lake Avenue and walking toward a man who starts walking away from him. Audio begins about 15 second after the officer gets out of the car. That's when the suspect turns and fires a shot at the officer. The officer immediately turns and runs, yelling that he's been shot, as two more shots can be heard in the background. The officer runs back to Driving Park Avenue, across the street from where he parked the car, and applies a tourniquet to his wound while radioing for help and giving a description of the suspect, who he says went south on Lake Avenue on foot. The officer says he's "bleeding out pretty good" from the gunshot. Other officers arrive 2 minutes into the video, rushing to the injured officer's aid and getting him into another patrol car before the video ends. Rochester police said the drone unit detected Cato around 5 a.m. in a pile of debris behind a building on Lake Avenue, not far from the shooting scene. Chief David Smith said the drone shined a spotlight on Cato, who then pulled a handgun and fatally shot himself.. Police said he has been with the department for just over one year and is expected to be on medical leave for the foreseeable future. The officer's family issued a statement, relayed by Rochester Regional Health at a press conference Friday afternoon, crediting his training with playing "a critical role in helping to save his life."519 Plaza on East Ridge Road could be deemed a public nuisance, pending an upcoming decision by the Irondequoit Town Board.Webster,N.Y. — Emergency responders are at the scene of a fire at a home on Holt Road near Shoemaker Road. The fire department says people were home at the timeA Batavia police sergeant, along with other first responders and bystanders, raced to pull a driver from a burning vehicle after a crash Monday. An Orleans County man faces a peeping tom charge in South Carolina after a woman said he left an audio recording device in her home.
