A starting job opened up on the Giants defense when Julian Love defected to the Seahawks on a two-year contract worth $12 million.

“I’ll be playing safety here and I’ll be looking to be the guy,’’ McCain said Thursday. “I’m coming here to play, I’m coming here to compete and I’m coming here to win.’’

“He goes and gets the football. That’s the most important thing out there is the pigskin. He goes, he finds the ball and the ball finds him.’’He led the Commanders in 2021 with four interceptions, operating out of the slot as a nickel corner. He was a 2015 fifth-round pick out of Memphis, selected by Dennis Hickey, the general manager in Miami at the time.

Those connections gave the Giants insight into McCann’s leadership ability and versatility as a safety and slot corner. The one-year, veteran salary benefits contract makes McCain an inexpensive addition. His play slipped a bit in 2022, as he allowed 79 percent of his targets to be completed for a passer rating against him of 111.9. He does not sound daunted about walking into a new locker room.
