As a player, Stem made it to the pros before sharing his knowledge and leadership for decades at his alma mater P'burg and at Becahi.

Legendary Lehigh Valley area high school football coach Bob Stem has died, it was confirmed Saturday morning. He was 84., reportedly named for the days before sewers, when housewives would dump the dirty water over the wall that looks down onto South Main Street.

His pro football career included stints with the AFL’s Boston Patriots, who drafted him in 1963, and the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. Stem played in the 50th annual Thanksgiving football game between Phillipsburg and Easton, and coached in the 75th and 100th. His final game in 2010 was a 3-0 overtime victory over Easton in a Thanksgiving Day snowstorm.
