Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Jose Berrios works against the Houston Astros during the first inning of a baseball game Thursday, June 8, 2023, in Toronto. TORONTO — The Astros had the perfect man on the mound to stop a losing streak. Framber Valdez is one of the best pitchers in the game and his team had won the last five games he started.
After scoring 11 runs in Monday's series opener, the Astros closed out the four-game set by scoring two runs or fewer in each of the final three games. The Blue Jays got all their runs off Valdez in the fifth inning when he walked the bases loaded with one out. Valdez didn't help himself with a fielding blunder when he scurried to his right to field a Matt Chapman tapper. Instead of going home to stop a run from scoring, he threw to second in a fruitless attempt to end the inning with a double play. He got one out, but a run scored. The Blue Jays then piled on with a ground-rule double by Alejandro Kirk and an RBI single by Brandon Belt.
