What started in a hallway three years ago has grown into a 3,000-square-foot wonderland filled with interactive, tactile installations. Co-founders Zachary Zulch and Natalie Earhart teamed up with TSBVI art teacher Gretchen Bettes to flip the script on traditional art spaces.
"Everything here is immersive," said Zulch. "It’s about your experience with the art—not just what you see, but what you feel." Since 2019, Touch the Art has created space for young artists to explore, express, and be seen. Students like Rosie Ramirez are learning to shape clay, build princess puppets, and share their imaginations with the world. “I feel proud,” Rosie said, “and happy that everyone’s going to see my art.” Each week, students work alongside professional artists to build four unique environments for the exhibit. The goal: to make art accessible for everyone, no matter their abilities. “Blind artists are just like any other artists,” said Bettes. “Art comes from the mind. They deserve to be seen and heard for what they create.” Earhart hopes the experience inspires everyone who walks through. “Art isn’t just visual,” she said. “When you include different perspectives, you get something truly powerful.”Experience opens Saturday, April 12 from 6–10 p.m. at Almost Real Things HQ, 820 Shelby Lane #103 in Austin. The event includes music, sensory installations, family-friendly activities, and more.
