Depending on who you ask, it's either something we can all agree on or it's the most divisive issue of our times. On Tuesday, a Texas House panel will hear about a There's only one item on the agenda for this meeting of the Texas House Committee on Public Education.

Starting at 8:00 a.m., members will hear invited and public testimony regardingSupporters call it a plan to improve school choice and provide opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to access better educational options. It would provide parents with a taxpayer-funded education-savings account-- or ESA-- to cover their child's education costs. But critics of ESAs prefer to call them vouchers much to the chagrin of supporters. State Senator Brandon Creight from Conroe sponsored the measure in the Texas Senate. This plan has been debated many times before, and the Texas House is where it's been consistently shot down in the past. Voters from rural areas worry budgeting a billion dollars to improve school choice won't help parents in their small towns where alternatives to the public schools may be non-existent or miles away. They also look at their local schools with some civic pride and the public schools are also often a major employer. But supporters of ESAs campaigned hard in the 2024 elections to elect candidates more likely to vote yes, so you may see some new faces deciding this issue. And with fierce support from Governor Greg Abbott and President Donald Trump, Republican lawmakers feel confident it will pass this time around.
