Black veterans of the Chicago Fire Department shared their experiences and insights with aspiring firefighters and paramedics at a panel discussion hosted by IIT Black Student Union.

Black veterans of the Chicago Fire Department gathered on Thursday to share their experiences and offer guidance to the next generation of firefighters and paramedics. The event, a panel discussion titled 'Rising Through the Heat: Black Voices in Firefighting and Paramedics,' was held at Wishnick Hall at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in collaboration with the IIT Black Student Union.

Attendees, including students like Ceaira Herbert, who is pursuing clinical counseling at IIT, had the opportunity to hear firsthand from seasoned professionals about the challenges and rewards of a career in the CFD. Herbert expressed her interest in exploring how her counseling expertise could be valuable within the department. Chicago Fire Captain Malick Bilal emphasized the accessibility of the profession, stating that a high school diploma is sufficient to apply and that it offers a fulfilling opportunity to serve the community.Panelist Dekalb Walcott Jr., a retired battalion chief and author of books documenting the history of Black firefighters at Engine 21 firehouse, highlighted the department's progress in diversity. While acknowledging the historical lack of representation, particularly before lawsuits and a significant influx of Black firefighters in 1943, Walcott pointed to the current number of nearly 700 Black firefighters out of a total of approximately 4,800. Fire Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the need for continued efforts to diversify the ranks. She emphasized the importance of outreach programs like the IIT panel discussion in inspiring young people from diverse backgrounds to consider firefighting and paramedicine as viable career paths. Nance-Holt stressed the inherent value of the profession, offering opportunities to make a tangible difference in people's lives and contribute to the community
