Troy University and Troy Athletics mourns the loss of a beloved member of their family, Johnny Williams , a former Athletics Director and Troy University Sports Hall of Fame member. Williams passed away on Tuesday, February 4th, at the age of 68 after a courageous battle with leukemia. \Williams' positive impact on Troy Athletics is widely recognized. Troy Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins Jr. fondly recalled meeting Williams in 1989 when he was the defensive coordinator for the football team.

Hawkins praised Williams' 'can-do' attitude and his ability to guide the athletic program during a crucial period. Williams' leadership was instrumental in Troy's transition from Division II to the highest level of NCAA football, culminating in the university's membership in the Sun Belt Conference. During his tenure as Athletics Director from 1994 to 2004, the university achieved 28 conference championships. \Beyond his contributions to Troy, Williams played a pivotal role in elevating collegiate athletics. He was one of the key figures behind Troy's move to Division I and served as the Athletics Director during a period of significant growth for the program. Under his leadership, the football team reached the FCS (I-AA) Playoffs six times in seven years and began competing at the FBS (I-A) level in 2001. Williams tirelessly worked to secure funding for athletic facilities, leading to the upgrades of Veterans Memorial Stadium, Tine Davis Fieldhouse, and Riddle-Pace Field, as well as the construction of new soccer, track & field, and softball complexes. His dedication earned him the recognition of the American Football Coaches Association Coaching Staff of the Year in 1987, following Troy's Division II National Championship run.
