Senior Julia Bonaguidi leads the way with seven goals as the Knights claim their fifth straight championship with dominating performance against the Highlanders.
Just like her older sister a year earlier, Bishop’s senior Julia Bonaguidi completed a four-year championship sweep in her senior year.
Bonaguidi, a future Cal player, scored five in the first half, including a penalty shot with 28 seconds loft.The Knights ended up outscoring their three playoff foes 51-14 overall.The No. 2 Highlanders vied in their second final in three years, the previous one in Division I. Elizabeth Spiller and Riley Hull each scored twice for Helix.Although Coronado senior Sofia Goicoechea and her teammates were outnumbered, they wouldn’t be outplayed in the Division I finals.
The Islanders, guided by coach Tim Reed, went through the season with a smaller roster than the typical 15 or so players, following the graduation of 11 seniors from last season. “We just had to stay even-keeled and play our game the entire way,” Gilbert said. “We stayed strong and steady.”As the final buzzer sounded, Torrey Pines sophomore captain Ryland Smith quickly swam to hug her nearest teammate.
“We kept telling each other that we had it,” Smith aid. “We knew that we had it. We had the skills and teamwork to do it. And we did it.” Bonita Vista moved up a level this season by the virtue of winning last season’s Division III championship. Mt. Carmel took control in its first final since 2018 with a seven-goal surge to establish an 8-1 edge over the No. 3 Pilots with 1:33 before halftime.
