Santiago Vazquez, 18, earns split decision in men’s senior open bout
Sam Randazzo laces up a boxer at Randazzo Brothers Boxing Gym before last year’s local Golden Gloves tournament.SAN ANTONIO — A welder by trade, Santiago Vazquez is good with his hands, relying on precise movements and hand-eye coordination to do the job.
Vazquez trains under Gilberto Garcia at Castillo’s Boxing Gym on San Antonio’s South Side, traveling the 30-plus miles from his house in Poteet to the gym after he gets off work at 6 p.m. All bouts were contested over three rounds, with open division bouts lasting 3 minutes, novice bouts 2 minutes and youth bouts 1 minute in duration.
Perez, 18, a senior at Stevens High School and fighting unattached, used his superior reach and punching accuracy to take control of the bout.
