Howard Koplowitz | [email protected] may be hard to tell the difference when looking through the lowest health scores of Jefferson County restaurants in August.
An employee was seen touching a pretzel stick with their bare hands, while others were observed not washing their hands for 15 seconds after any potential contamination like handling soiled utensils or using the toilet, the inspector wrote. The inspector cited Sonic for dirty drink nozzles that contained “bio-slime and mildew.”Roots & Revelry, 1623 Second Ave. North, BirminghamRoots & Revelry lost 14 points from critical violations after an Aug. 23 inspection.
Ten of those points came from foods stored at temperatures either above or below acceptable levels listed by the county. There was also no thermometer to measure internal temperatures or water temperature – a four-point deduction. During the initial inspection, the inspector wrote they noticed water dripping from the ceiling onto cooking surfaces, causing food to be contaminated. Burger King was deducted five points.
Iguana Grill in Hoover has the dubious distinction of the lowest health rating of any Jefferson County restaurant inspected in August. It lost 22 points from critical violations after an Aug. 14 visit from the health department.

New 'droplet battery' could pave the way for miniature bio-integrated devicesResearchers have developed a miniature battery that could be used to power tiny devices integrated into human tissues. The design uses an ionic gradient across a chain of droplets -- inspired by how electric eels generate electricity. The device was able to regulate the biological activity of human neurons. This could open the way to the development of tiny bio-integrated devices, with a range of applications in biology and medicine.
