Bills to protect in vitro fertilization passed both chambers of the Alabama Legislature Thursday, the latest steps in lawmakers’ attempts to counteract a recent Alabama Supreme Court order.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Bills to protect in vitro fertilization passed both chambers of the Alabama Legislature Thursday, the latest steps in lawmakers’ attempts to counteract the recent Alabama Supreme Court order that declared a frozen embryo to be a child.
“What they want to do is have these embryos and be successful in implanting them,” explained state Sen. Tim Melson, R-Florence. “They frequently eliminate the ones that aren’t optimal.”Alabama lawmakers rushed to protect in vitro fertilization services Thursday after fertility clinics shut down in the wake of a state court ruling.
Singleton wants patients to be able to access IVF treatments again but he’s concerned about unintended consequences from the bill that passed off the floor. Melson says his bill will give patients access to IVF treatments as soon as possible saying “There’s a sense of urgency in the middle of the process, but urgency, you still have to make sure it’s right, to the best of your ability.”
