Billie Eilish is in talks to join Oscar-nominated director Sarah Polley in an upcoming adaptation of an iconic Sylvia Plath novel long in-development

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.Billie Eilish is eyeing her first film role in The Bell Jar after earning acclaim for her acting debut.

Deadline reports that the singer is in talks to star in Sarah Polley's adaptation of the Sylvia Plath novel The Bell Jar. Jeff Sneider was the first to report Eilish's involvement. Sarah Polley, who won an Oscar for writing the screenplay for Women Talking, has signed on to direct and write the Focus Features film, with Joy Gorman Wettels serving as producer. The Bell Jar, which is Plath's only published novel after releasing two poetry collections, centers on a college student named Esther Greenwood who accepts an internship in New York, but her experiences living with mental health conditions end up having a major impact on that promising path. Esther's journey in the 1963 book is loosely inspired by the author's own life. The first adaptation of The Bell Jar was released in 1979, with Marilyn Hassett starring as Esther Greenwood. Unfortunately, the film was widely panned by critics and holds a score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. In the years since then, there have been multiple attempts to re-adapt Plath's novel, including in 2007 with Julia Stiles and then in 2016 with Dakota Fanning . A Showtime series also never materialized. Now Focus Features is signing on for a brand-new remake, which marks Eilish's first movie role. The award-winning singer previously acted in one episode of Prime Video's Swarm, which earned her a People's Choice Award for TV Performance of the Year. Eilish has also hosted Saturday Night Live, appeared on Sesame Street, lent her voice to When Billie Met Lisa, and starred in the documentary Billie Eilish: The World's a Little Blurry and concert film Happier Than Ever: A Love Letter to Los Angeles. Her next project is the James Cameron-directed Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour , which will be released in theaters on May 8.
