Bilibid inmate dies of COVID19
MANILA - An inmate at the New Bilibid Prison who contracted the coronavirus disease died Thursday night, the Bureau of Corrections said Friday. The BuCor earlier said the inmate, who was from the medium security compound at the Muntinlupa penitentiary, was admitted to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine on April 17.
Some 40 prisoners at the crammed penitentiary were earlier placed under isolation while authorities have conducted contact tracing, it added. Medical staff who attended to the inmate have also been placed under quarantine as they are considered as suspect carriers of the virus. Various groups have urged the Supreme Court and the Department of Justice to release low-risk offenders and those most vulnerable to contracting the virus, including the sick and elderly, as they faced the threat of infection in the country's crowded jails.
