The union representing workers at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports said it has stopped talks with management over a new labor contract due to use of automation.

Critical talks between the union and management for East Coast and Gulf Coast ports have broken down over allegations made by the International Longshoremen's Association that Maersk is using automation to displace workers.

The International Longshoremen's Association, which represents union workers at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, said Monday that it has suspended talks scheduled for this week with the United States Maritime Alliance as part ofThe ILA said in a release that it canceled the talks with ports management to discuss a new labor deal after discovering that automated technology was being used by APM Terminals and Maersk, the world's second-largest shipping company and APM Terminals'...

The ILA is the largest longshoreman union in North America, representing 85,000 members. The ILA's master contract with the United States Maritime Alliance — which represents terminal operators and ocean carriers — is set to expire Sept. 30. May 17 was the initial cutoff date set by the union for the local contracts to be agreed to so an overall master contract can then be negotiated.
