The US President's failure to grasp the moment for a diplomatic solution over Ukraine - thereby turning a once-thriving nation into a human graveyard - is inexcusable, writes Professor Joseph M. Siracusa.
Joe Biden’s mindless policy that the US and its allies would defend Ukraine for “as long as it takes” has transformed the former Soviet republic into a graveyard.“We will stand for liberty and freedom today, tomorrow, and for as long as it takes.”
Like them, Biden continues to treat Russian President Vladimir Putin’s removal from power as an indispensable condition, along with the creation of a war crimes tribunal in the Hague and a permanent regime of lethal sanctions. From day one, Biden set out not only to defeat Russia but also to humiliate America’s former Cold War enemy.What Biden had in mind for Russia was something akin to the brutal peace that the victorious allies imposed on Germany at Versailles.
There was much giddy talk about the prospects of the coming Ukrainian counter-offensive, and no talk about the prospects of a ceasefire. Putin, keen on the fruits of war but not war itself, seems to have concluded that Washington would prefer diplomatic negotiations to a disruptive, destructive war in Ukraine, with a potential to engulf the region – and beyond.That was, after all, the essence of the “Long Peace” that weathered the most perilous moments of the Cold War.It’s right up there with his forces’ bungled departure from Afghanistan.
