WASHINGTON—On his first foreign trip, President Biden will seek to rally European partners and other democratic nations against what he views as a threatening rise in authoritarianism, as the world emerges from the health and economic crises posed byMr. Biden has for years called for strengthening U.S. alliances. One of his chief tasks in the coming days in Europe will be advocating for the primacy of the U.S.-led western liberal order that has been in place since World War II.
The meetings come as the Chinese government seeks to extend its sphere of influence and challenge the U.S.’s economic supremacy as the country emerges from the coronavirus pandemic with a robust economy and is a major trading partner with much of the world.
