A sophisticated smuggling tunnel was discovered at the US-Mexico border near Loop 375 in El Paso, Texas, following a joint operation by multiple agencies.

A smuggling tunnel was discovered Friday afternoon in the Lower Valley after a bi-national operation. Claudio Herrera-Baeza, spokesperson with the U.S. Border Patrol in El Paso , said that thanks to an operation involving Mexican law enforcement as well as U.S.

Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Safety, El Paso Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI, a man-made tunnel believed to be used by smugglers was found at the border wall, parallel to Loop 375, near the big red 'X' in Ciudad Juarez.Regarding how the discovery was made, authorities said they received a tip about the tunnel's existence Thursday. According to CBP, the tunnel leads into a public storm drain in El Paso and the entry hole was covered by a metal plate. CBP described the tunnel as six feet tall and four feet wide, supported by wooden beams and equipped with both a lighting and ventilation system. When asked if anyone had been arrested, Herrera-Baeza said he couldn't comment as the tunnel is still under investigation. Furthermore, Herrera-Baeza called the discovery 'historic' and urged people from the public to come forward with information if they saw or know something about the tunnel.KFOX14/CBS4 cameras on the scene caught agents in full tactical gear, hauling out what looks like evidence bags with digging tools like pickaxes and shovels
