A bi-national operation led to the discovery of a sophisticated smuggling tunnel near Loop 375 in El Paso. The tunnel, found Friday afternoon, is believed to have been used by smugglers to transport goods and possibly people into the United States. Authorities received a tip on Thursday about the tunnel's existence and subsequently launched the operation involving several agencies, including Mexican law enforcement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, and the FBI.

Claudio Herrera-Baeza, spokesperson with the U.S. Border Patrol in El Paso, said that thanks to an operation involving Mexican law enforcement as well as U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Safety, El Paso Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI, a man-made tunnel believed to be used by smugglers was found at the border wall, parallel to Loop 375, near the big red "X" in Ciudad Juarez.
CBP described the tunnel as six feet tall and four feet wide, supported by wooden beams and equipped with both a lighting and ventilation system.
