This article explores the lesser-known forces that influence the motion and interactions of celestial bodies in our solar system, alongside the dominant force of gravity.

While Isaac Newton's understanding of gravity laid the foundation for our comprehension of the solar system , other subtle forces also play a crucial role in shaping celestial movements and interactions. A recent paper by astronomer David Jewitt from the University of California delves into these lesser-known forces, offering a comprehensive yet accessible overview for non-specialists. Gravity undeniably reigns supreme as the force governing the solar system 's structure and motion.

The Sun, with its colossal mass, exerts the strongest gravitational pull, orchestrating the orbits of planets, asteroids, comets, and other celestial bodies. This gravitational dance maintains the stability of these orbits and influences phenomena like tides on Earth caused by the Moon's gravitational tug. However, Jewitt's paper highlights that gravity isn't the sole player. Smaller bodies, particularly comets and asteroids, are susceptible to other forces that can significantly impact their behavior. These forces include recoil from ice sublimation, radiation pressure from the Sun, and relativistic effects. For instance, when ice on comets sublimates (transforms directly from solid to gas) due to the Sun's heat, the escaping gaseous molecules carry momentum, exerting an equal and opposite force on the comet, propelling it slightly in the opposite direction. Similarly, radiation pressure, the force exerted by light photons on objects, can shape comet tails and gradually alter the orbits of small bodies. The paper also acknowledges relativistic effects, which can cause particles to spiral inward towards the Sun
