SAN ANTONIO - Tough questions were raised today as Bexar County Commissioners questioned the Bexar County Sheriff's Office's request for additional funding amidst a surge in the county jail population."We've gone from about 4200 inmates in January to 4600 in May, and then June is when we spiked," said a spokesperson for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office.
However, the financial implications gave pause to the commissioners, who tabled the approval discussions seeking more detailed financial breakdowns. County Judge Peter Sakai expressed concern over the lack of financial clarity provided by the Sheriff's Office. Despite the setback, commissioners are exploring other solutions, including coordinating with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to transfer some prisoners to state facilities.
