SAN ANTONIO — The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office announced they’ve added 23 new prosecutors to their team and seen an overall decrease in felony case backlog. The DA said in a press release Thursday the new prosecutors will be joining the office’s largest division responsible for handling family violence cases. Others will head to various divisions handling duties such as making charging decisions, handling court dockets, and proceeding to trial among the various Bexar County Courts. A recent commissioners’ court budget work session highlighted more than 30 vacancies among attorney positions across several divisions. District Attorney Joe Gonzales emphasized the need to retain experienced attorneys who could ultimately assist in decreasing the office’s current felony case backlog. The addition of these talented prosecutors marks a turning point for our team,” Gonzales said. “Their energy and enthusiasm are exactly what will be needed for tackling the challenges ahead, including continuing to work on reducing our backlog. In November 2023, the office was approved for a high-risk intake reduction overtime program, which allowed the DA's office to use its own funds to reduce the felony case backlog. Despite not securing additional funding for 2026, the office noted significant progress within the program.
