The county is asking state legislators to spend $60 million to renovate seven state hospital buildings, creating up to 336 mental health beds for jail inmates.
Bexar County has asked state lawmakers for $60 million in the upcoming state budget to renovate seven buildings in the San Antonio State Hospital complex to take in jail inmates needing psychiatric services. The changes could add up to 336 beds for inmates and criminal defendants who need psychiatric tests or care to stand trial — space Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said would help ease pressure on the county jail.
The project did not include renovating any of the old State Hospital buildings, several of which were built in the 1960s and 1970s and are in bad shape. A 2014 structural analysis found that floors in some buildings sloped because the foundations had sunk. “They do need a significant amount of work to bring them up to a current mental health care facility,” Curry said. The county hired architecture firm HKS Architects to craft redevelopment options for the older hospital buildings.
