Students at Bettye Davis East Anchorage High School were placed in a short lockdown Thursday afternoon after reports surfaced of a student with a gun on campus, according to an official with the Anchorage Police Department. A police spokesperson stated that the initial report indicated a student carrying a gun was making threats against another student. Shortly before 1 p.m.
, the school announced over the PA system that the lockdown had been lifted, and police confirmed the end of the lockdown approximately 15 minutes later. During the lockdown, Anchorage Police Department (APD) officers conducted a thorough search both inside and outside the building. As of the latest update, no firearms have been located on any students. The search of the school continued. In a letter addressed to families of students at East High and Russian Jack Elementary, the principals of both schools reported that both institutions went into lockdown at approximately 12:15 p.m. following communication with the police department. The lockdown lasted approximately 45 minutes, according to the letter, which also emphasized that no weapon was discovered and both students and staff remained safe. The letter concluded by reaffirming the schools' commitment to safety, stating, 'As always, safety remains our number one priority at BDEAHS and Russian Jack Elementary School.
