Dutton Ranch is getting a new showrunner. The upcoming Yellowstone spinoff from franchise creator Taylor Sheridan will see Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, with the fan-favorite couple attempting to start a new life together in South Texas.
The premiere episode is set for May 15 on Paramount+. As part of his What I’m Hearing newsletter at Puck, Matt Belloni reports that Dutton Ranch showrunner Chad Feehan has been relieved of his duties. The reason for this is less to do with any creative or story reasons, according to the reporting, and more to do with the fact that Feehan clashed with the likes of Reilly, Hauser, and other important figures who had been on Yellowstone for years.
In the end, Sheridan and fellow Yellowstone franchise producer David Glasser stepped in and decided to fire Feehan. He will likely be replaced with another writer who is already credited as part of Dutton Ranch season 1, although a specific name is not mentioned. According to sources, Feehan completed work on the show's first installment but won't be involved beyond that. This is not the first time Feehan has worked on a Taylor Sheridan drama.
He was previously the showrunner and executive of Lawman: Bass Reeves, which ran for one season and starred two-time Emmy nominee David Oyelowo as the first Black U.S. Marshal. Because of the fact that Feehan completed work on the debut season, this change won't have an immediate impact on Dutton Ranch. The show gets its name from the land Beth and Rip call home, a symbol of what they nearly gave their lives to protect.
It also stands out as what they are willing to move away from, in part to help guide Carter into becoming the man he’s meant to be. The spinoff gets its focus from the fact that Beth and Rip are facing harsh new challenges during their move to South Texas.
In particular, they'll face a ruthless rival ranch determined to defend its empire at any cost. Along with Reilly, Hauser, and Little, the cast of Dutton Ranch features four-time Academy Award nominee Ed Harris and five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, the powerful and charming head of a major ranch in Texas. Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, and Natalie Alyn Lind also star.
