Skilled migrants could have earned an extra $1.25 billion in wages between 2013 and 2018 had they found jobs that better matched their skills.

He has 120 customers and is on track to have $100 million worth of loans on his books by 2024.

Even though Mr Shahsavarzdeh was well-educated and had experience working at a foreign exchange company in Iran, most job applications were met with automatic rejections as employers were concerned about his visa situation.“But any rejection letter or email I was receiving was motivating me for some reason,” Mr Shahsavarzdeh said. “I didn’t stop trying.”The turning point came in 2021 when ANZ offered him a six-month contract as an account manager.

Skilled migrants often struggle to gain suitable employment in Australia because many employers mistakenly assume they cannot not speak English or lack skills and education, said Violet Roumeliotis, chief executive of Settlement Services International.
