Candace Eng and Diana Prince have the kind of friendship that defines what friendship is. Eng, 68, and Prince, 67, went viral earlier this month after they were randomly approached to discuss their relationship in an Instagram video.
The clip, which has garnered millions of views, was moving: The best friends of almost 50 years opened up about how Prince helps Eng while she undergoes treatment for breast cancer. In the comments, viewers gushed about the evident depth of their relationship. “We’ve been conditioned to prioritize romantic love and relationships so much that people sometimes forget how beautiful and precious friendship love is,” one person wrote. “This sums up the power of female friendship: sometimes one of the greatest loves of your life is your bestie,” another commented. The response has been just as heartwarming for Prince and Eng. “It’s been really great. Reading those responses, it made me feel really good. It touched my heart and everything,” Eng tells TODAY.com. “It was just surprising. We didn’t think it would go this crazy, because we’re just best friends, and we didn’t think that our friendship was that special and it would catch people the way it did,” Prince adds. From Dorms to Doctor Appointments Eng, a divorced mother of one son, and Prince, a married mother of two sons, met in college in 1977. Their kids have played together, they've spent Thanksgivings together, and the pair left their families behind to go to Barbados the last two years. They both live in New York City and speak at least three or four times a day. And now that Eng is undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Prince says she tries to see her bestie at least once a day. “She’s always there for me. She’s been with me through every chemo and doctor appointment. She’s been here with me,” Eng says about Prince. “She listens, and she’s very, very calming. She’s also very supportive,” Prince says about Eng. “She’s always there for me.” In fact, Prince seems to know just as much about Eng's diagnosis and treatment plan as she does, and even helped her choose her doctors. Eng is getting treated at the same hospital as Prince's mother, who survived cervical cancer. “I did a lot of research, and we had really nice doctors,” Prince recalls of her mother's illness. “So when Candace was diagnosed, I said, ‘I think you should go where my mom is going. They’re really excellent.’ … So we got a second opinion there. Candace loved the doctors, so that’s where she’s staying.” When the duo was asked about Eng's treatment plans, it was Prince who answered. “She’s having chemo and immunotherapy right now, and then she’s going to have radiation for about six weeks, and then after that, she’s going to have just immunotherapy for a year, and then to see how that goes,” Prince says. She adds that after the immunotherapy, the hope is that Eng will be able to switch to a pill that prevents the cancer from returning. Eng and Prince are waiting to see if doctors will give them the OK to go to Barbados together for the third time this year. One fan even offered their vacation rental to the duo. Since their video went viral, a GoFundMe page for Eng has raised more than $107,000, almost hitting the goal of $120,000. And the duo created their own Instagram account, run by one of Prince’s sons and his wife. Helping Others Be More Open Prince says Eng was feeling “a little bit low” the day the viral video was filmed, and she was 'surprised' her friend shared her diagnosis. “But I think that was something that at that time she needed to say to be more open about cancer,' Prince adds. “It’s all about how it made Candace feel because Candace is a very shy person, and she’s very private.” But the response has made it all worth it. “You’re getting a lot of feedback from people that do have cancer, and it helped them to speak up about it,” Prince says. “We’d just like to thank everybody for the support that they’ve given us. It’s really helped Candace a lot to open up, and we’re extremely grateful that.' Eng adds: “I’m just very happy. And every night I read all my followers, their messages, and it just makes me feel very good.” The video was a gift for viewers, but it was also a gift for the best friends. “That is what I’m glad we got out of it — that Candace was able to free herself about having cancer and realize it’s nothing to be ashamed of,' Prince says.
