A Monday morning stop in Chillicothe offered a colorful picture of a campaign that's just getting going.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno gives a campaign speech at the Ross County Republican Party headquarters in Chillicothe on Monday, Aug. 5, 2024.CHILLICOTHE, Ohio–During an otherwise quiet morning in Chillicothe, a 40-foot bus with Bernie Moreno’s face plastered on it was parked around the corner from a tethered-down giant inflatable cigar-smoking cat.

Bernie Moreno, who is here to kick off a stateside bus tour for his Senate campaign this week, went to talk with the anti-Moreno protesters. He got into it a little with Terry Williams, a local UCC pastor. The made-for-social-media scene kicked off a new phase of Ohio’s U.S. Senate race, which is beginning to shift into a higher gear as the summer months recede.

Katie Smith, a spokesperson for the Ohio Democratic Party, issued a statement referencing the cat, which is wearing a suit while clutching a bag of money in one hand and a hard-hat wearing worker in the other. The inflatable caricature, which has often been deployed by left-leaning protesters at rallies around the nation, was a reference to Moreno’s status as a wealthy businessman who got rich founding a chain of Cleveland-area car dealers.

The move shows Moreno’s relatively simple campaign strategy: try to get Ohioans who backed former President Donald Trump by 8 percentage points in 2016 and 2020, and who seem likely to do so again this year, to vote for a Republican for the U.S. Senate, too.
