After 35 years, the Placer County Sheriff's Office has identified human remains found near Colfax as Wendy Abrams-Nishikai, a missing Berkeley woman last seen in 1989.
COLFAX – Human remains discovered near Colfax over three decades ago have been officially identified as belonging to a missing Berkeley woman. The Placer County Sheriff's Office announced a significant breakthrough in a cold case on Monday. Back in 1990, human remains were found off an embankment on Yankee Jims Road in the Colfax area. The technology available at the time was insufficient to identify the remains, forcing detectives to classify the investigation as a Jane Doe case.
Since then, advancements in forensic genealogy have led to the reopening of numerous formerly cold cases. Last year, a likely next-of-kin of the individual was identified through DNA analysis, ultimately guiding detectives to identify the remains as belonging to Wendy Abrams-Nishikai. Abrams-Nishikai was last seen on Halloween 1989 in Berkeley. She was 21 years old at the time and left behind a young daughter. The circumstances surrounding Abrams-Nishikai's death remain unclear. 'While her death is still under investigation and the case is ongoing, we hope this identification provides some closure to her surviving family members after 35 years of uncertainty,' the sheriff's office stated. Anyone with additional information regarding Abrams-Nishikai's death is urged to contact the Placer County Sheriff's Office
