Chinese display maker BOE is facing quality control challenges with Apple, potentially impacting the supply of upcoming iPhones including the iPhone SE 4. Apple has rejected a large number of BOE displays, leading to a significant drop in shipments. This has caused a shift in orders towards Samsung Display, although LG Display may still contribute to the supply chain.
A Chinese-based iPhone display provider, BOE , is encountering difficulties with Apple due to quality concerns regarding its products. These issues have the potential to disrupt the supply of future iPhones, including the anticipated iPhone SE 4. BOE , which supplies LTPS AM OLED displays for the iPhone 14, 15, and 16 models, has faced a significant number of its displays rejected by Apple , leading to a substantial decrease in shipments.
From the beginning of 2024, BOE has only managed to ship between 7 and 8 million panels to Apple, falling far short of its initial projection of around 40 million units for the same period. Consequently, the majority of BOE's display orders have been redirected to Samsung Display, although LG Display may still participate in the supply chain. LG Display primarily provides displays for the iPhone Pro series. Despite these recent challenges, BOE and LG Display have been selected as the OLED suppliers for the iPhone SE 4, which is widely expected to be unveiled this week. This entry-level smartphone is anticipated to feature a 6.1-inch AMOLED display, for which Apple is reportedly paying $25 per unit. BOE initiated the production of iPhone displays for Apple with the release of the iPhone 12 in 2020. Since then, the company has encountered several hurdles, including production issues and occasional failures to meet Apple's quality standards. These setbacks have resulted in temporary reductions in order volumes. The long-awaited iPhone SE 4 is projected to be the first model in the series to incorporate an in-house 5G chip. It is expected to be equipped with an A17 chip, an enhanced camera system, and be the inaugural iPhone SE model without a home button. Instead, it will offer Face ID, a feature commonly found in other iPhones currently on the market. There is no information available regarding whether BOE's difficulties will impact the early supply of the new iPhone.
