The Berea Historical Society will present its posthumous Grindstone Heritage Awards to Jerome Kobie and John Siodla Oct. 25. BEREA, Ohio -- A Berea police captain and a local home builder will be honored with posthumous Grindstone Heritage Awards Oct. 25.
Jerome “Doc” Kobie, who retired as a captain with the Berea Police Department, and John C. Siodla, a noted Berea businessman who constructed many Berea houses, will receive the posthumous awards from the Berea Historical Society.This is the 43rd year for the awards, which are given by the historical society to outstanding Bereans. Recipients are nominated by residents and must have been deceased for at least five years.
Kobie, who grew up in in Berea, graduated from Berea High School in 1931. He was a Navy veteran, a 29-year member of the Berea Police Department and a volunteer at the Mahler Museum. He died in 1994. Siodla, a second-generation Berean, graduated from Berea High School in 1930. He worked at the Dunham Company and was a home builder in Berea for many years.
