Below Deck Down Under star Captain Jason Chambers with Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Captain Glenn Shephard

Below Deck Down Under season 3 may not be the most widely adored season of the series, but watching has me thinking a lot about how much better of a captain that Jason Chambers is than Below Deck Sailing Yacht’s Glenn Shephard.

While Captain Jason and Captain Glenn have never really been pitted against one another professionally, both having experience in the Below Deck franchise encourages viewers to compare and contrast. After a difficult Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, many have been looking deeper into Captain Glenn and his leadership abilities, especially with Captain Jason’s high level of professionalism. Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, viewers were met with a lot of resistance from Captain Glenn about the way Gary King, his longtime First Officer, was being treated and edited. After learning about the sexual misconduct allegations against Gary, Captain Glenn was expected to be a bit more dismissive of his former crew member, but his position on his longtime colleague was far more positive. Captain Jason, in contrast, has been working aboard Below Deck Down Under season 3’s superyacht and dealing with the crew’s behavior in a stern-but-fair manner. The Below Deck captains couldn’t be more different.Jason Is More Firm With His Crew He Knows Where The Line Is Although Captain Jason and Captain Glenn are both good at their jobs in their own right, their behavior is often quite different on their iterations of Below Deck. While both Below Deck Down Under and Below Deck Sailing Yacht tend to be the more relaxed versions of the series while Below Deck and Below Deck Med can be more serious, the Captains maintain very different crews. Captain Jason, who’s been part of Below Deck Down Under since the beginning of the series, has always been seen as the most charming captain in the franchise, but he counters that with professionalism. Posts Captain Jason knows how to be firm with his crew, especially when they’re stepping out of line. Throughout Below Deck Down Under’s run, he’s been able to make quick calls on behavior that have quite literally saved the crew at times. During Below Deck Down Under season 2’s charter season when Luke Jones was caught attempting to sexually assault Margot Sisson, Captain Jason took quick action, terminating Luke and those who were supporting his behavior. While Captain Glenn has seen Gary’s poor behavior with women throughout their time on Sailing Yacht, he’s never been firm about acting or correcting it. Glenn Is More Forgiving Than Jason Is He Tries To Appeal To The Crew’s Emotions As Captain Glenn has moved through his time as Parsifal III’s captain both on and off Below Deck Sailing Yacht, he’s been shown to be a forgiving person. While it’s not a bad characteristic, Captain Glenn’s penchant for forgiveness has cost him a lot of respect in recent seasons, especially when it comes to Gary and his behavior. Even prior to his sexual misconduct scandal, which has turned into a massive lawsuit for Gary and the production company behind Below Deck, Gary was behaving unprofessionally with women of all varieties on the show. Gary’s behavior rubbed viewers the wrong way. Although Captain Glenn has been a fixture on Below Deck Sailing Yacht, his behavior has made it clear that he’s more interested in maintaining his relationships with his crew than doing the right thing. Seeing how quickly Captain Jason moved to right a wrong on Below Deck Down Under season 2 and knowing that Captain Glenn has been highly aware of the inappropriate behavior Gary’s perpetuated throughout his time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht has really made me think. While I respect Captain Glenn, I don’t like that he’s so forgiving to someone like Gary, who doesn’t really deserve it. Jason Would've Fired Gary If He Were In Glenn's Shoes He Wouldn’t Stand For Gary’s Behavior Close Throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, despite the fact that Gary took on a reduced role at the behest of the editors behind the scenes of the show after his scandal came to light, it was clear that there was very little that had changed for the First Officer aboard Parsifal III. Captain Glenn and Gary’s relationship hasn’t become any different when it should’ve, and Gary’s job was secure throughout the season despite him doing things that should’ve gotten him fired. Outside of his misconduct scandal, Gary’s drinking became a serious issue aboard the sailing yacht, impacting the crew. While Captain Glenn stayed fairly quiet about it, Gary’s behavior was a major issue for the rest of the crew in a way that ultimately made it clear he should’ve been fired. Leaving the misconduct scandal out of it entirely, Gary’s drinking and the behavior that came with that should’ve left Captain Glenn without another choice, as he was behaving unprofessionally toward his subordinates. Captain Jason would’ve fired Gary swiftly if he’d been on Below Deck Down Under, as he wouldn’t have been able to defend Gary’s behavior at all. Instead, Captain Glenn let things slide as he usually does. Glenn Gets More Personal With Crew Members Than Jason Captain Jason Maintains Professionalism Although Glenn and Jason both have good relationships with their crew members, it’s clear that their relationships have become a detriment in Glenn’s circumstance while they’ve been beneficial for Jason. Captain Glenn often becomes too involved in his crew members when he’s working aboard Parsifal III, especially one’s he’s been invested in for years. Glenn’s relationship with Gary has been a problem, and if Colin MacRae hadn’t left before Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, it likely would’ve been a conflict of interest as well. Glenn has never refuted the lack of professionalism in his relationships with his crew members. While Captain Jason has always had good relationships with his crew, as well, it’s been notable that he understands his boundaries with those he works with. For example, Captain Jason’s relationship with his former Below Deck Down Under Chief Stew Aesha Scott was a great one. Jason and Aesha shared a great rapport with one another, but when it was speculated that Captain Jason and Aesha could be moving into unprofessional territory, the Below Deck Down Under captain made it clear that Aesha was his colleague, but their relationship had boundaries. His professionalism makes him the better Below Deck captain. Below Deck Down Under is a reality television series that follows the crew of a luxury yacht navigating the waters of Australia.
