A community-based organisation has warned the ANC to look elsewhere for a coalition next time, after accusing the party it helped retain control of Rustenburg Local Municipality of reneging on a signed service delivery-based agreement
Ofentse Kombe, Botho Community Movement councillor in Rustenburg, said: “The ANC should not forget that we’re going to local government elections again next year and Rustenburg will be a hung municipality. If they continue like this then there is no way we’ll consider working with them again.”
BCM says that among the service delivery items agreed on was the expansion of a local clinic and extension of its operational hours to 24/7, as well as having an ambulance on standby. Going into the council election, the EFF had 24 seats, the DA had 14 seats, the Forum 4 Service Delivery had four seats, while the BCM, African Independent Congress, United Democratic Movement and the Freedom Front Plus had one seat each.
Together with the African Independent Congress, the BCM cast its council vote for the ANC get 45 seats for it to retain power. The governing party won control of that council with 46 votes, leaving mystery as to where the third vote came from.
