Popular wildlife show Autumnwatch has been axed by the BBC after 17 years on air, as the broadcaster announced plans to invest more into its programmes Springwatch and Winterwatch

The BBC has announced that it has cancelled seasonal wildlife programme Autumnwatch in a bid to "focus our resources on content that has the highest impact".

A BBC spokesperson said: "These are challenging times financially and we need to make difficult decisions and focus our resources on content that has the highest impact. Some of the show's fans were none too happy about its cancellation as they took to Twitter to vent their dismay. "I've never taken three months off work. Never. I can barely sleep I am so excited. I might have to ban [partner] Charlotte from the studio," he said.
