A series of landslides have struck the Bay Area after heavy rainfall from a Tuesday storm. From the North Bay to San Francisco, residents have been impacted, with some facing devastating losses. Drone footage captured a horrifying scene in Santa Rosa, where a family's home, rebuilt after the Tubbs Fire, was destroyed by a mudslide. Public Works crews are working to clear debris and engineers are assessing the stability of hillsides in affected areas.
Landslides have been a significant concern in the Bay Area following Tuesday's storm, impacting regions from across the North Bay to Telegraph Hill in San Francisco. One family, who had painstakingly rebuilt their home after the devastating Tubbs Fire, endured a heartbreaking tragedy when a massive mudslide engulfed their property. Drone footage captured the harrowing scene of a landslide crashing into their home in Santa Rosa , where two individuals were miraculously rescued on Tuesday night.
In San Francisco, Public Works crews are scheduled to commence the cleanup process on Thursday following a landslide on Telegraph Hill. Officials reported a substantial loss of approximately 400 cubic yards of rock dislodged from the hillside during the storm. Specialized engineers conducted thorough inspections of the area on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, prioritizing the safety of homes situated at the top of the hill.Laura Sullivan-Green, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at San Jose State University, commented on the incident, stating, 'Telegraph Hill has a history of landslides, and over the years, improvements have been made, including enhanced drainage and retaining walls to mitigate the risk. The slide that occurred yesterday, thankfully, appeared to involve only the surface materials and did not destabilize the hill, indicating that our efforts to manage the risk are effective.' While emphasizing the importance of proper drainage systems in homes, Professor Sullivan-Green reassured residents that there is no need for widespread alarm following this event. However, Kaashvi Seth, a San Francisco resident, expressed her concern, remarking, 'I've decided I won't be using this sidewalk for my commute anymore. What if it rains again and the same situation happens?' Public Works spokesperson Rachel Gordon assured the public that crews would diligently monitor the hillside throughout the rainy season, ensuring its stability and safety. Additionally, landslides were reported in other locations, including Forestville along the Russian River, Fairfax, and Healdsburg. Binod Tiwari, a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at California State University, advised caution following the significant landslides in Santa Rosa and Forestville, which prompted evacuations. He stated, 'I would exercise caution with this prolonged and heavy rainfall. If an area experiences a landslide with two and a half to three inches of rainfall, it could potentially experience another landslide with a lower amount of rainfall in the following days or even weeks.
