Battle of the bad: Beat writers assess Rockets, Spurs ahead of two-game weekend 'showdown'

Heading into a back-to-back weekend matchup, the Rockets of coach Stephen Silas, left, and the Spurs of counterpart Gregg Popovich haven't been easy on the eyes this season. At 13-49, the Rockets sit at the bottom of the NBA, mired in an 11-game losing streak. The Spurs, who lost 16 consecutive games before winning their last two, are similarly inglorious at 16-47, a mere 2 1/2 games ahead of Houston.

But no franchises have better mastered the art of tanking — or rebuilding/developing if Adam Silver’s talking points are to be believed — for life-changing international big men. However, I might argue the lottery gods have already done right by the Rockets, giving them the No. 3 and No. 2 picks in the past two drafts. Maybe they have already drafted their future centerpiece and should throw their neighbors down I-10 a bone.

It is unclear if Josh Christopher and Usman Garuba will be consistent rotation players for a good team, though both have shown flashes. Jabari Smith Jr. has shot horribly, and it seems to be getting to him. He shows his defensive tools but cannot be considered a good defensive player.
