Solomon: Rockets-Spurs goes from stellar rivalry to cellar rivalry
When last Jabari Smith Jr. and the Rockets tangled with Zach Collins and the Spurs on Dec. 19, San Antonio scored a 124-105 win at Toyota Center.Last place taking on next-to-last place.Don’t you dream of the good ol’ days when the Rockets-Spurs rivalry was a heated battle between contenders? The first and only NBA playoff game I attended as a kid was a matchup between these two at the Summit.
The Rockets sit alone at the top of the bottom of the standings with a 13-49 mark. The Spurs are 15-47, matching their worst-ever record through this point. That was in the 1982-83 season, the Race for Ralph year, when finishing last meant the result of a coin flip could land Ralph Sampson. While this weekend’s contests could swing the battle for the worst record, they will not determine which team lands Wembanyama.
I miss the days when tanking was real and not necessarily frowned upon. You Boomers raised your darn millennials to believe in this fairness crap. When has America ever been about fairness?
